BANKART REPAIR

Description about the Surgery

Bankart repair is a surgical procedure performed to repair a Bankart lesion, which is a tear or detachment of the labrum in the shoulder joint. The labrum is a ring of cartilage that surrounds the shoulder socket and helps stabilize the shoulder joint. During the surgery, the torn labrum is reattached to the glenoid (shoulder socket) using sutures or anchors.

Reasons for the Surgery

Bankart lesions commonly occur due to traumatic shoulder dislocations or repetitive overhead activities, leading to shoulder instability, pain, and limited function. Bankart repair is recommended for individuals with symptomatic Bankart lesions, particularly those at risk of recurrent shoulder dislocations. The surgery aims to restore stability to the shoulder joint and prevent further dislocations.

Before Surgery

Before undergoing Bankart repair surgery, patients undergo a comprehensive evaluation to assess the extent of shoulder instability and determine the appropriate treatment approach. This evaluation includes physical exams, imaging studies (such as MRI), and sometimes diagnostic arthroscopy. Patients receive education about the procedure, its risks and benefits, and what to expect during recovery. Pre-operative instructions may include activity modifications, pain management strategies, and smoking cessation.

During Surgery:

During Bankart repair surgery, the surgeon makes small incisions around the shoulder joint and uses arthroscopic techniques to access the torn labrum. The torn labrum is reattached to the glenoid using sutures or anchors placed into the bone. The goal is to recreate the labral attachment and restore stability to the shoulder joint while preserving its range of motion.

After Surgery

After Bankart repair surgery, patients undergo a period of rehabilitation to restore shoulder stability and function. Physical therapy focuses on improving range of motion, muscle strength, and proprioception while protecting the healing labrum. Patients may initially need to use a sling or brace to immobilize the shoulder and allow the labrum to healproperly. Post-operative care includes pain management, wound care, and monitoring for complications such as infection or stiffness.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation after Bankart repair is essential for promoting labral healing and restoring shoulder stability. Physical therapy sessions are tailored to the patient's specific needs and goals, focusing on protecting the healing labrum while gradually restoring mobility and strength. Rehabilitation aims to optimize shoulder function and minimize the risk of complications, such as recurrent dislocations or stiffness. Close communication between the patient, surgeon, and physical therapist is essential to ensure a successful recovery process.
